A new 911 Turbo which is the sixth generation of the Porsche 911 Series had its world premiere in February 2006. Dr. Ing. H.c. Porsche launched this top-of-the-line model at the Geneva Motor Show on February and it was on the German market by June. How is this model different? Well, there have been a few improvements. For one thing, the output at 6000rpm is 480 bhp. It has a 3.6 liter engine and a rated torque of 620 Nm with the maximum torque going up to between 1950rpm and 5000 rpm. So what do these numbers translate to? Driving performance for one. The Porsche 911 Turbo has a six-speed manual transmission which goes from zero to 100 km/hour in just 3.9 seconds. And the coupe goes on to reach 200 km/hour in 12.8 seconds. Yes, it’s got truly great performance and yet the manufacturers have kept the gas consumption down to an average of 12.8 liters per100 km. The Porsche 911 Turbo has an automatic transmission option – the Tiptronic S. This is for the speed freak and can, from a standing start, go up to 100 km/hour in just 3.7 seconds and can get to 200 km/hour in just 12.2 seconds. The automatic as well as the manual transmission models go up to a top speed of 310 km/hour. And if you want to increase your car’s flexibility even more, you could get the optional Sport Chrono Package Turbo. What else does the Porsche 911 Turbo have? The all-wheel drive has been redesigned and it now has a multi-disc clutch that is electronically controlled. This makes sure that the system will control the optimal torque distribution so as to give you the best possible drive. With this, all the available power will be transferred to the road. And the PTM or the Porsche Traction Management makes sure that the two axles get variable power distribution. So, the car has an outstanding traction whether in the snow or the rain and it is extremely agile on narrow country roads. It also ensures that even at high speeds you get optimal safety. All that speed is balanced with a great braking system - monobloc fixed-caliper disc brakes which have four pistons at the rear axels and six in front. The perforated and internally ventilated brake discs on the front and rear wheels have a diameter of 350 mm. Porsche has the PCCB or the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake which is an optimized brake system made of ceramic, a hi-tech system that weighs 17 kg less than the conventional or standard brake system, giving you fading stability that is excellent. How different is the bodywork? The major change is in the front end with its distinctive cooling air inlets which are tautly drawn. These, together with the oval bi-xenon headlights spell a snazzy new look. From the rear, too, it’s got a more powerful look. The tail end is around 22 mm wider than before and the redesigned wing spoiler has been aligned to this. The lateral air inlets which were earlier behind the doors have been redrawn and now give you better cooling. And how much does all this come for? Well the basic price of the Porsche 911 Turbo is $122,000 and this does not include taxes. The basic price in Europe is 115,000 Euros. |
